Sale Report

ANTARCTIC RARITY

With clearances sent to Wotton Under Edge from as far away as Exeter the salerooms were again at full capacity with many old and new faces appearing to trawl through the 1,500 or so lots and the overall outcome was positive.

Perhaps the rarest item on offer was a Prospectus announcing Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition via The Weddell Sea in The Endurance in 1914 it included a plan for the crossing of the continent, the two ships, a schedule of staff, expert views and tributes from the press all contained in just 30 pages reputedly pulled from a skip in Dursley some years ago, it realised £1,650 to a specialist collector.

The highest price of the sale however was taken for a Regency mahogany Regulator by John Denne of London, the small and neat appearance of the case and dial saw it selling at £3,500 followed by a Regency 8-day longcase clock by Snelling of Ashford which realised £1,050.

A set of nine 18th century Liverpool tiles with printed detail of classical style urns sold at £1,000 and a collection of Victorian oil lamps and shades £1,100 .  The best of the paintings saw £920 paid for 19th century oil on canvas of an angel and young child.

Other notable prices included £,1050 for a small Georgian chest of drawers with brush slide, £680 for eight William V dining chairs, £780 for an Edwardian dining set comprising eight chairs and a D-end table, £780 for a Georgian walnut  lowboy.

The next sale to be held between Christmas and the New Year on 30th/31st December at 10.30am, is certain to be full to capacity and will include on behalf of executors the following two cars. Viewing Monday 29th December 10am – 5pm and mornings of sale.
