THE SUN SHINES AT WOTTON
Again the salerooms at Wotton Under Edge were full, lots gathered from the Cotswold area and sold to buyers from all parts of the country, surprisingly Americans were in evidence for the first time in quite a while so too Australians, this amongst other factors resulted in the usual high selling rate. With the Spring upon us demand for garden ornaments and stoneware increases strongly, a total of six limestone staddle stones and caps, or rick stones as they are traditionally known, sold for a total of £1,170 and a good 19th century sundial raised on a stone pillar made £880, while two large troughs made a total of £770.

The highest price of the sale was taken for an oil on canvas, a 19th century copy after Paulo Verenese showing amongst other Baptisms that of St John, in original untouched condition it realised £3,900. |

The best of the oak furniture included a good 17th century oak coffer with early carved detail it made £1,200, a mid 18th century mahogany demi-lune fold-over top tea table sold at £950, while a fine quality inlaid Edwardian mahogany cabinet specifically built to house a safe made £840, while £1,150 was paid for a Regency rose wood secretaire chiffonier. A good Florentine carved pine wall mirror with bright gilt finish made £1,000 and surprisingly a large Regency mahogany pedestal sideboard made £920.

The best of the collectables was a fine quality ebony walking cane with carved ivory handle in the form of horses and dogs heads, it realised £1,240.
The June sale is certain to be full and will include a specialist book section, some 200 lots, good quality volumes with particular emphasis on hunting, polo and early aviation, together with a collection of over 75 good quality Japanese woodcut illustrations from one private collection.
