LATE SUMMER VISITORS

With the summer drawing to a close and many familiar species of birds flying back to warmer climates it was surprising to find so many foreign buyers flocking into the Wotton Auction Rooms with Taiwanese, Australian, New Zealand, Chinese and mainland Europe all represented and again a very high percentage of lots sold, furniture in particular going consistently to English dealers from the north of the country who seem to be very short of stock and pleased to find a room full of interesting and varied items gathered from this locality.

Prices included £2,000 for a Harlequin suite of Old English pattern silver cutlery with beaded borders weighing in total 150oz., £580 for a Delft ware flower brick, £640 for a near pair of 19th century Chinese plates.

£840 for a collection of 19th century dessert ware with chariot and vase detail.  A collection of Beatles related effects totalled £620, while a severely damaged white marble stature of a boy hauling in a fishing net by Pietro Tenerani made £900.

A good rocking horse sold at £600 and a three quarter size snooker table with accessories made £1,080.  A continental armoire made £720 and a mid 19th century mahogany and pine display cabinet £920.  The best of the dining tables made £700 and a longcase clock £610.

The October sale will be full, instructions received from executors and other private vendors.  The sale will also include a special book section of some 300 lots being a large collection of Cotswold related books, 18th/19th century leather bound works, limited editions, atlas’s and special editions.  The sale will be held on October 21st/22nd starting at 10.30am, viewing on Monday 20th October 10am – 7pm and mornings of sale 9am – 10.30pm.
