EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE KITCHEN SINK

  

1500 lots greeted potential buyers as they walked through the doors of the Wotton Auction Rooms last week where in addition to the usual variety of furnishings could be found a large and interesting book section.  The library, around 350 lots was principally the collection of one man a retired anthropologist with a diverse interest in life and his books reflected this.  Enquiries were received from Australia, Canada, USA, Europe as well as all parts of the British Isles.

 

Prices included £820 for a narrative of A Second Voyage In Search Of A North West Passage during the 1820’s, £560 for Songs Of Central Australia, £880 for Travels Through The Russian Empire circa 1802, £940 for 67 volumes of The New Naturalist Series, £700 for a 4-volume set of Steam Engines circa 1850 and £600 for an early English translation of Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Corinthians.  The book section totalled a little over £24,000.

 

Amongst the furniture £1,550 was taken for an extravagant Georgian style wing chair made circa 1900, this had been discarded to a garage over recent years, the shape attracted many potential buyers despite its overall poor condition, a Georgian oak chest on stand sold at £680 and a Lancashire mule chest at £600.

 

Elsewhere a large Swiss musical box playing 12 Airs realised £1,260 whilst amongst the silver £380 was paid for an Argyll (a double skinned gravy pot), two oil paintings by Sean Fingleton sold for £1,050 whilst the same price was taken for an oil in the Impasto technique showing a French landscape.

 

Remarkably two kitchen sinks in painted surrounds sold for £960.

 

The next sale will be held on March 26th/27th just after Easter, and will include a strong entry of recent probate instructions.
