Sale Report

GOOD AUCTION WEATHER

August, traditionally a month where auctioneers produce smaller catalogues or in some cases do not conduct sales at all, this however was not the case at Wotton Under Edge where a full saleroom greeted regular and new buyers alike, many perhaps on warmer August days would have been elsewhere.  Furniture sold particularly well with over 90% finding buyers.

The highest price of the sale was taken for a weathered marble figure of a young girl with a skipping rope, sadly she had been the victim of an attempted theft some years ago, the botched burglary resulted in both hands being broken away, she was recovered however in the middle of an adjoining ploughed field, she sold for £3,100 despite the necessary surgery.

A collection of furniture by Ernest Race produced in the early 1940’s with aluminium framework enclosing timber panels, which to the untrained eye would have had the appearance of being worthless, however the 9 pieces which had been purchased by an architect for a house he built in Cirencester at that time had remained there ever since attracted strong interest from several collectors selling for £2,500.

Amongst the more traditional lots an example of an early 19th century prisoner of war work bone man of war just 5” or so in length and about the same in height sold for £2,400.

Silver continued to sell well the best on offer was a suite of Fiddle & Thread pattern cutlery totalling 101oz with the makers mark of George Angell it realised £1,050.

With the saleroom virtually cleared out entries particularly from summer probate instructions are arriving, the September sale is expected to be both full and interesting.
