BUOYANT JUNE
Clearances mainly from the Bristol
area provided the backbone of the June sale at Wotton Auction
Rooms, which once again proved to be a virtual clear out.
From one such property appeared a
pair of continental majolica table centres, naturally painted
and modelled as partridges and chicks. Despite damage to both
pieces they were considered worth a fight. Four telephone lines
took the bidding to £3,600 and it was won by a continental
buyer.
Watches have attracted a keen
interest in the last few sales. Some forty-five lots or so
totalled a little around £7,000 in this sale including an 18ct
gold gentleman’s pocket watch £880, an Omega Seamaster De Ville
wristwatch and strap at £1,120, and a Zodiac ladies 18ct gold
wristwatch at £860.
Silver continues to find buyers -
collectors and speculators fight over every lot. The highest
prices in this section included £1,450 for an Old English
pattern canteen by James Dixon & Co, with other lots selling
considerably over estimates. This section realised around
£8,500.
Amongst the paintings two sold well
above expectation, firstly a good quality miniature portrait of
a young man, to the reverse a length of plaited hair, set within
a pretty enamelled gold frame, which sold for £1,700 and a
gouache painting Carlo Bossoli dated 1864 showing a coastal
scene with lighthouse sold at £1,400.
Amongst the furniture three late 19th
century oak refectory tables, each to seat 10-12 people,
realised £1,680 and a Howard sofa dating from the 1950s, in very
poor order and awaiting full re-upholstery,
sold for £1,700.
The July sale on 19th/20th
will once again be full. Good entries are already to hand
including the Rolex wristwatch worn by Brian Trubshaw, leading
test pilot on Concorde before she went into full service. It
will be accompanied by photographs and other provenance.
Further entries can be accepted until around the
8th July.
