Consistency is the key with auctions, large sales attract wide interest, varied and good quality lots attract strong prices and good prices attract further items for sale. Perhaps this is a rather simplistic view of the auction room business plan but it works consistently and recent sales at Wotton have borne this out.
The June auction included a small 18th century oak dresser with a raised plate rack that sold at £2,200, followed by a large Victorian walnut bedroom suite comprising of a triple wardrobe, dressing table, washstand and bedstead at £1,020. Bureaux which have been very difficult to sell over the past few years included a good mid 18th century oak example which sold rather better than expected at £880. £860 was taken for a Dutch oak draw leaf dining table which had failed to make it’s reserve of £750 in the previous sale. A good inlaid Edwardian mahogany display cabinet did well at £800 and a biedermeier style secretaire chest made £610, whilst a Regency/William IV mahogany wardrobe realised £820. A large collection of 19th century mahogany table leaves, long abandoned, sold in three lots for £1,000.
Amongst the smaller objects a watercolour by Robert Caruana Dingli showing a Maltese street scene realised £1,050, and a large 19th century oil on canvas in the 17th century manner showing the infant St. John sold at £840. A 19th century bronze model of a temple lion realised £760 and an Arts & Crafts mirror in pewter with applied enamel panels took £420. An interesting and extensive collection of local hunting related items including coats, boots, pamphlets, etc. sold at £640. Gold prices remain high and five and a half sovereigns sold for a total of £840.
The next sale on July 20/21st will be a large event, with a good number of entries already received and awaiting cataloguing, and will be in the company of the BBC who are filming an episode of ‘The Antiques Road Trip’ for transmission later in the year.
