RETURN TO THE ISLE

 

Lot 591 - £2,600

 

William Hoggatt, 1880-1961, was a landscape painter in watercolours, pastels and oils and in 1907 he settled on the Isle of Man and lived in Port Erin for many years. Three of his watercolours from this period appeared in the auction rooms at Wotton Under Edge this month.

The first showed a harbour at Castle Town with the town in the distance. Dated 1907 and signed by Hoggatt, it sold for £2,600. The two following pictures, which showed another busy harbour scene and also a garden scene again signed and dated 1907, sold at £2,400.  Both lots were purchased by the same buyer and are likely to return to the island.

  

Amongst the furniture a substantial Victorian mahogany breakfast table some 60” in diameter raised on a turned column and four swept supports sold at £1,350.

 

Other furniture prices included an Edwardian rosewood chiffonier at £620 and a small Victorian mahogany library bookcase at £580.

Amongst the miscellaneous items some 600 Cotswold roofing tiles realised £400, a Victorian musical box with an 8-tune card sold at £640 and a collection of tinplate O gauge railway effects at £520.  Two 18ct gold South African medals dated 1967 made £770.

 

The next sale will be held on Tuesday/Wednesday July 21st/22nd , a week later than usual, viewing on Monday 20th July 10am – 7pm and the saleroom at the time of writing is filling quickly, the rooms will be full to capacity for that auction.
