With a wave of probate instructions forming a considerable portion of the May sale it was always going to be an interesting and varied auction.
A strong collection of 19th century Chinese blue and white porcelain, in the main plates of various sizes but also together with tureens and vases, etc, found keen buyers. The best individual price was taken for a damaged 18th century baluster shaped vase with drawn neck which sold at £1,500, however the whole collection totalled a little over £6,000.
The best of the coloured Chineseware was a Cantonese punch bowl, brightly coloured both inside and out and in fine condition, 40cm in diameter and selling at £2,000.
Georgian glassware seems to be returning to favour. Five Bristol Blue and gilded decanters together with further items including goblets, jugs and decanters sold at £860. Two complete 19th century red and white ivory chest sets in the Staunton pattern realised £900.
Amongst the militaria a collection of Irish medals dating from the 1916 uprising and later sold at £750, while a Victorian stick gun by Hubbard with detachable stock made £540.
Miscellaneous items including a collection of Edwardian Alligator skin bags at £410, a black Rhino horn (Kibwezi 1945) at £9,900, whilst the best of the Persian rugs sold at £430. A 19th century Gouache Bay of Naples painting realised £680 and a moonlit painting by W A Thornbery sold at £780. The best of the vintage postcard albums realised £460. Five lots of general mixed jewellery totalled £1,280 and a pair of 19th century bronze Marley horses sold at £900.
Amongst the furniture £3,100 was taken for a Georgian mahogany long case clock by Thomas Harben of Lewes, £1,350 for a George III mahogany shaped knife box, £1,000 for a substantial Edwardian walnut board room table and fifteen chairs and £1,750 for a 19th century gothic oak revival dining table. Finally, three Georgian upholstered wing chairs stored in a chicken shed and in appalling condition but with potential sold for £1,060.
