Sale Report

IT'S ALMOST SUMMER

Few objects in this business are subject to seasonal fluctuations. Garden ornaments and furniture, however, is one such area that is.  With thoughts turned to garden design and planting, prices for accessories seem to rise in the late Spring and we have never been slow in bringing to the auction rooms troughs, urns, statues and the like to time with this demand. On this occasion an Italian limestone statue of a classical female figure holding a mirror attracted the highest price of the day, standing some 8’ high from head to the base of her plinth, she stood in the garden of a property in Winterbourne for some 50 years, changed hands for £3,200 and now resides in a garden in At Albans.

Lot 1173 - £3,200

Removed from a local property but originally from Cornwall came a pair of large granite balls on swept plinths, each some 2.5’ in diameter and with a total weight of approximately 1 ton, they sold for £720. Almost every other piece of garden related ware sold much above pre-sale estimate.

Elsewhere items sold consistently well, an unusual 18th century oak estate cupboard with an arrangement of drawers and cupboards to each long side sold for £2,100 whilst a New Zealand buyer paid £1,400 for a good Regency mahogany chaise lounge.

Lot 1421 - £1,400

Amongst the jewellery a good pair of diamond earrings sold for £1,000, while back to the furniture section a Victorian mahogany extending dining table with two additional leaves sold for £880, a Victorian armchair by Howard & Son of London made £700 and a Victorian mahogany cylinder bureau bookcase £710, whilst the best of the ceramics saw £820 paid for a Wedgwood Bi-centennial Cornucopia pattern dinner, tea and coffee set.

Lot 300 - £1,000

Entries are now invited for the next auction on June 16th & 17th, the sale already includes a diverse collection of items particularly from probate instructions.
