SUMMER SELLING
July - the start of the summer
holidays and generally a quieter month in the auction world, but
at Wotton Auction Rooms a full saleroom greeted buyers, both
regulars and holidaymakers, the latter enjoying the spectacle of
the auction and amazed at the variety and volume of lots on
offer, while the regular buyers to whom these sales are part of
the monthly cycle were as consistent as ever.
Curiosities found eager buyers, an
Italian phone bidder purchased lot 535 – Southalls Biblical
Herbarium, a simple pine box containing specimens of plants,
fruits, seeds, etc. mentioned in the bible for £2,100. A
collection of Victorian doll’s house furniture including
kitchenalia, etc. realised £1,050, whilst the better of the
furniture including a Howard & Sons Chesterfield sofa sold at
£1,200.
Amongst the paintings £800 was paid
for a French oil landscape by Georges Robin and £760 for a 17th
century oval bust length portrait of a lady.
Jewellery, particularly gold
continues to sell well, with £1,340 paid for an articulated
necklace in 18ct gold weighing in at 72 grams and with other
lots considerably above pre-sale estimates.
Silver prices continue to be solid,
with silver selling at somewhere around £16 per ounce, and
considerably more for items of interest and quality.
Amongst the watches, two attracted
much interest, both formerly the property of Brian Trubshaw,
Head Test Pilot on Concorde. Firstly his Rolex Oyster Perpetual
with red and black bezel, replacement strap and accompanied by
numerous photographs of the famous pilot wearing the watch sold
for £2,000, while his Zenith 9ct gold wristwatch presented to
him after his work on the VC10’s sold at £640. An Art Deco
ladies dress watch sold at £1,080.
Other lots included a marine
chronometer at £900, and a Howard & Sons daybed at £750.
The August sale will contain an
interesting library of 18th century travel and
ornithological books as well as the usual mix of lots.
Present high flying sought-after
items include silver, jewellery and gold and indeed any items of
quality.
