Another good sale in October with strong demand from buyers in all departments.
Perhaps the most interesting section being the collection of 18th & 19th century political and royal commemorative ware sold on behalf of the Executors of the late John Barrett of Crowe Hall, Bath.
The sixty five individual examples mainly mugs and jugs, included examples concerning the Reform Acts, Crimean war, Elections, Napoleon, Wellington, The Great Exhibition, George III and particularly Queen Charlotte, Nelson, Wesley, The Peterloo Massacre, etc., so something for all persuasions. The collection realised a total of £7,523 with buyers gathering in the rooms, represented by agents or bidding by phone.
Other ceramics included a 19th century Staffordshire bull baiting group at £1200.
Jewellery continues to sell well, often the gold element or bullion price pushing figures higher than before, some buyers are paying above the gold fixed price on the strength that gold will continue to rise in price in the future, in this uncertain world. An 18 carat gold bracelet and necklace combination weighing in at 2011 grams sold at £3,520, whilst a small collection of necklaces estimated at less than £100, sold at £1,120.
Amongst the miscellaneous objects a 19th century cast gilt model of a troika pulled by three horses at speed and set on a malachite base realised £1,550, whilst a collection of 19th century walking sticks with novelty heads some in silver, while other in ivory sold at £1,498.
A collection of hunting watercolours and prints many relating to the local Berkeley Hunt attracted strong local interest. Amongst the originals works by Eric Meade-King, Michael Lyne could be found, with prints by F A Stewart, Gilbert Holiday, etc, the collection sold well totalling £3,724.
Best of the furniture included Howard & Sons library chair, upholstered in burgundy leather sold at £1,600, while a massive German walnut display cabinet sold at £950. A 19th century mahogany pedestal partners desk sold at £1,450, whilst the best of the longcases sold at £1,180, a lacquered example with an eight day movement by Thomas Estwich of London.
Next months sale includes some one hundred or so lots from the attics of Montys Court, a substantial country house near Taunton, as well as numerous other good entries from local estates. At the time of writing it has the potential to be our best furniture sale of the year.
