LAST OF THE SUMMER SALES
With summer drawing to a close the
auction season once again begins to gain momentum. The Wotton
Auction Rooms were once again full to capacity.
Moorcroft is one of the few modern
day ceramics that has a strong demand no matter what the date of
issue. Here we had a total of twenty-eight lots, generally all
post 1980 from two collections. The most expensive individual
piece was a vase designed by Rachel Bishop and known as the
Owlpen pattern, which was limited to 100 examples. This
particular vase realised £1,700 and overall the collection
realised £3,250.
Oriental ceramics continue to
find ready markets and a Famille Rose vase with flared neck and
peacock detail sold at £2,300 and a large jardinière realised
£1,150.
Those precious metals, silver and
gold, continue to sell strongly. A very plain silver tray
weighing 100oz sold for £1,900, an Art Deco tea set totalling
52oz achieved £980, a Victorian fruit bowl 36oz was bid to £780,
and a fine quality Chinese Export 5-piece tea service 72oz in
total sold at £4,300 (£60 per oz), while a pair of rather
damaged Chinese silver and enamelled vases sold at £1,050.
Miscellaneous prices included £1,450
for a carved Chinese ivory card case, £480 for a taxidermy dome
of humming birds, £700 for a Hornby O gauge tin plate
locomotive, £580 for a Stroud Brewery poster after Lawson Wood,
£470 for a Grateful Dead Concert poster and four other posters
designed by Rick Griffin from the late 60s/early 70s period, and
a watercolour by Mary Fedden, a study of turnstones, realised
£1,400.
Amongst the furniture, a good
set of twelve Edwardian mahogany dining chairs sold at £1,500, a
Victorian walnut credenza made £1,150, while an Irish tilt top
occasional table from the Killarney area of Ireland sold for
£1,950 and is likely to return to that district. A London long
case clock by John Brodin of London in a chinoiserie case
realised £1,650.
The October sale will include an
extended jewellery section and our specialist valuer Judith
Kilby Hunt will be in the sale rooms on Monday 3rd
October to catalogue entries already received and advise you on
any items you may wish to include.
