Sale Report

A VIRTUAL SELL OUT

For the first time in some years the pound/dollar exchange rate lies at around 1 dollar 50 to the pound, and at that rate the English antique exporters start receiving serious orders from their counterparts in the US antiques trade, this not only adds an extra dimension to the range of buyers but almost immediately increases the prices paid for a wide range of the lots being sold.

As usual the salerooms were both packed with goods and buyers resulting in a virtual clear out.  A collection of Georgian oak sent for sale from Swansea found a favourable reception, an 18th century refectory table realised £2,600 despite changes to the framework, small dressers sold well, the best realising £1,200.  A coffer bach (a small bible box) sold at £840, while two freestanding corner cupboards one in mahogany and one in oak sold for £700 and £720.

A continental kingwood kneehole veneered partners desk sold at £2,600 despite extensive restoration needed.

Elsewhere an Art Deco ring with a geometric setting sold at £2,250 and a good quality cylinder music box by F Le Coultre in a partridge wood case sold to a German buyer at £1,300.  The best of the pictures was an 18th century oil on panel probably Dutch showing an allegorical scene with a gout ridden old man surrounded by his hoard of gold, in conversation with a skeleton representing death, this too made £1,300.

The next sale to be held on April 20th & 21st will again be a capacity event, probate instructions include a large collection of English 18th & 19th century pottery and other ceramics, with further instructions from Westonbirt Girls School to sell a number of large tables and Cossham Hospital to sell the original committee room furniture, Victorian and other library bookcases, etc., prior to the hospital complete re-fit, this is in addition to the busy general day to day instructions from those moving house, down sizing, etc.
