Sale Report

NO STOPPING

Following the highly successful Christmas sale which ended on New Years Eve, a quick turn around was necessary for the January sale held some three weeks later.  This was achieved despite the very bad weather including several days snow during the early part of the month which saw other auctions with either reduced capacity or sadly cancelled.  We managed to present around 1100 lots which, because of the difficult trading conditions at the beginning of the month,  met with solid demand from stock - hungry buyers.

Top price taken for the sale was an oil on canvas  by Maurice Canning Wilks, an acclaimed artist of Irish scenery.  This one of the Connemara landscape dated from around 1930 and came from a property near Dursley.  There was every likelihood it would return to Ireland, however at £3,000 it returned to Dursley at a property only a mile or so from where the story began.

A further painting by Joseph Thors showing a country landscape near Godalming finds a new home in Yorkshire for £1,800.

Amongst the ceramics an English earthenware charger with polychrome decoration showing a naive painting of a shepherd with crook sold at £2,000.

An interesting collection of Japanese artefacts which came to light during a clearance scattered in drawers, cupboards and attics and including compasses, small boxes, bronze mirrors, inros, iron lanterns and kettles, found favour with various buyers and totalled approximately £1,300.

Gold continues to sell well with strong demand for jewellery, particularly chains, necklaces, bracelets, coins and watches  and even damaged and broken objects.

Amongst the silver £750 was taken for a collection of  19th century fiddle, thread and shell pattern flatware, £480 for a four piece tea and coffee set and £360 for a coffee and chocolate pot.

Amongst the collectables two carved ivory tusks realised £410 and a quantity of  modern collectors toys including some tin plate examples totalled around £1,700 in approximately 25 lots.  A Victorian stuffed and mounted dog made £270 and a Volkswagen Sharan 1979, sold on behalf of executors, made £950.

Amongst the furniture the top price of £1,900 was taken for an oak bookcase designed by Betty Joel and made at the Token Works in 1931.  A Victorian oak extending table made £880, while three long-case clocks each made an identical price of £580.

Entries are welcomed for the February sale until Monday 8th of February but the saleroom is filling up quickly so prospective vendors should telephone before setting out.
